Been fairly busy as of late, so I haven’t had a whole ton of time to listen to new stuff or post anything, mostly since I haven’t been listening to a lot of stuff outside of work the last two weeks. Hoping to listen to the new Bad Religion album and the new Daft Punk albums soon (I technically have heard the new Daft Punk, but we were talking over it a lot and a bit drunk so I’m not really counting that), plus a few other new things that are new to me that I’ve picked up on recommendations.

But yeah. Busy few weeks. Been getting a lot of work done with Charles on the game. Been taking care of my garden, most of my seeds have sprouted and my peppers and tomatoes have (for the most part) taken transplanting from the kitchen table into the backyard very well. One of my closest friends Wally got married last week, and I was deeply honored to have been in his wedding party. Declined on a camping trip this weekend, but went out to Twin Rivers just to hang out anyway, and managed to slash my ankle open on a thorny vine and burn the hell out of my chin with a bit of flaming marshmallow (don’t ask).

I posted this album in its entirety about a month ago, but I really absolutely love it so I have to recommend it again. This track is probably my favorite, and if I ever get married I’m definitely using his recording of ‘Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring’.

I like folk punk a lot. Spoonboy is up there with Pat the Bunny and the Andrew Jackson Jihad dudes as my favorite folk punk.

The Shaggs - Who Are Parents (Philosophy of the World, 1969)

Speaking of awful albums…

This particular awful album is actually quite endearing, due to how it came about being somewhat legendary. So this guy was told by a fortune teller that his daughters would be successful musicians when he was a kid, along with a few other predictions. When the other predictions came true, he figured the third would as well. So, he goes out and buys shitty secondhand instruments, pulls all three of them out of school, and starts them in music lessons and makes them form this band.

So, despite not really having any clue how to actually play, they do some gigs, and make a fairly limited edition (less than 1000 pressings, if I remember correctly) album. It more or less languishes in obscurity for the next six or so years, before Frank Zappa shows up on Dr. Demento’s radio show (which you absolutely need to check out if you’re unfamiliar with it), plays the song My Pal Foot Foot, and says that they’re better than the Beatles…which, knowing how Frank Zappa was, he probably actually meant. A (quite frankly, astoundingly) large number of performers have admitted to really digging the album over the years, mostly due to the fact that it’s bluntly honest and incredibly unique.
